As a leader and/or a coach, broadening our understanding of people and the differences they bring to their role or coaching session is vitally important to our success. Time and effort spent to develop this understanding is hugely rewarding.
I have recently completed a course in Understanding autism, Asperger’s and ADHD - MOOC (massive open online course) - through the University of Derby. This is comparable to level 6 on the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ)
This free short online course encourages us to challenge our own definitions and perceptions of autism and ADHD. It is an opportunity to examine several key themes around both autism and ADHD in order to obtain skills to help people with these conditions.
ADHD is one of the most common childhood conditions and it can continue through adolescence and into adulthood. So, we will all interact with people with ADHD at some point
Approximately 750K people in the UK alone are on the autism spectrum
The course is designed to help raise awareness and encourage communication and education about these issues in the community and amongst professionals and stakeholders
The course, recognised by the ADHD Foundation. consists of 6 units. Most value for leaders and coaches is in the first 2 modules (Unit 1 - ADHD and hyperkinetic disorder, Unit 2 - Autism spectrum disorder) and these are the most comprehensive with some knowledge-check multiple choice tests.
It’s free, and is allotted 18 CPD hours. You get a Certificate, individual badges for each Unit through Mozilla Open Badges which can then be added individually or as a single course completion badge to your social media profile(s)
