The RISE Model for Feedback

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

I have mostly stuck to two models for exploring and providing feedback in my coaching. I use CORBS where I am providing feedback and CEDAR where I am taking a coachee through self-analysis.

I have recently come across something new to me - the RISE Feedback Model. It was created by Emily Wray, who works closely with students to help them discover who they are and articulate the story of their personal and professional development through a media rich portfolio. So, the model is mostly used in education, but I see opportunities to use it in my practice.

It works in two ways:

  • The RISE Model for Peer Feedback structures and facilitates the giving and receiving of meaningful critiques. This could be an alternative for when I would use CORBS

  • The RISE Model for Self-Evaluation structures and facilitates a process of personal introspection. I can use this approach when I might have always used CEDAR

RISE is an acronym for Reflect, Inquire, Suggest, and Elevate and the model goes like this...

To reflect means to recall, ponder, and articulate. At this level of feedback, share what stood out to you and why.

To inquire means to seek new information or understanding. At this level of feedback, analyse and ask questions to gain clarity.

To suggest means to introduce ideas for improvement. At this level of feedback, offer suggestions based on your grasp of the current assignment, issue, or opportunity.

To elevate means to raise to a higher degree or purpose. At this level of feedback, share any insight or encouragement you have on how to approach or optimize similar situations in the future.

Emily Wray is the founder of Make Sense Media, an Educator, Designer, Speaker and Storyteller. Make Sense Media is a collective of design professionals making an impact in classrooms and corporations through the design of relevant and engaging educational experiences.
